The present-day Scottish Parliament was created in 1998 after the British government passed the Scotland Act 1998.

Devolution for Scotland and to a lesser extent Wales was a flagship policy of the incoming Labour government.

The old Scottish Parliament was dissolved with the Act of Union 1707.

The Scottish Parliament is currently controlled by the Scottish National Party.
