Recognising England: The Case for a National Day

England’s national day passes each year with far less recognition than it deserves. St George’s Day should be a moment of shared pride, reflection, and celebration, yet it remains an ordinary day for most people. This is a missed opportunity for communities across the country and the British Parliament fails the people of England by not making it a national day.

As campaigners for an English Parliament, we have long argued that England should have a Bank Holiday to mark its national identity, just as Scotland celebrates St Andrew and Northern Ireland marks St Patrick. Wales continues to campaign for St David’s Day to receive the same status. England should not be left behind and we want people to stand up for England.

The case for a St George’s Day bank holiday is both cultural and practical. England has a rich history of achievement that spans literature, science, industry, and democratic development. From the works of Shakespeare to the breakthroughs of Newton, from the establishment of parliamentary democracy to the creation of world envied public institutions, England has shaped the modern world.

A National Day of Recognition would provide an opportunity to celebrate these achievements in a way that brings people together. Local events, school activities, and community gatherings could strengthen civic pride and encourage a deeper understanding of England’s history and values. We urge MPs to make sure they activity show their support for St George’s Day

Importantly, our campaign is inclusive. Celebrating St George’s Day is about recognising everyone who contributes to England today, regardless of background. It is about shared identity and we want everyone in England to celebrate together.

The absence of a Bank Holiday sends the wrong message about the importance of England’s national story. It is time to correct that and a  St George’s Day Bank Holiday would be a positive, unifying step for England and it would reflect pride in the past and confidence in the future.
