Sir Keir Starmer’s 6 milestones for “our country”

Our Country

The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has set out six milestones for “our country”:

England flag

Rebuilding “Britain” by building 1.5m new homes in England, ripping up English planning laws to remove barriers for developers.

England flag

Hitting the target of 92% of “our NHS” patients in England waiting no longer that 18 weeks for elective treatment.

England flag

Increasing the number of children leaving reception years hitting development targets in schools in England.

England and Wales flags combined

Increasing the number of police officers, special constables and PCSOs in England and Wales by 13,000.

UK flag

Increasing domestic energy production in the UK through it’s Scottish-headquartered Great British Energy company.

UK flag

Raising living standards in the UK with higher real terms disposable income.

With the possible exception of the house building targets and planning reforms (England should not be meeting the UK’s housing needs by itself) these are all laudable ambitions but Sir Keir went to great lengths throughout his speech today to conceal the fact that most of the UK government’s plans are for England.

Devolution has been a reality for the privileged minority in the UK for over a quarter of a century now, it simply isn’t plausible for politicians to pretend to be ignorant of how British rule works in England. Failing to be clear about territorial extent when announcing policies is a deliberate choice and one that misleads and misinforms the public through the whole of the UK, not just in England.

If you see misleading statements like this online regarding devolved matters, we would encourage you to remind them that #ThatsDevolved and to #SayEngland.
